Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
It is official – Connecticut-based singer-songwriter Kenny Foster has gone the pop route with his new single “Fixing Up Everything,” leaving behind the Take Five-adjacent math rock of “Poor Little Trillionaire.”
This is a rather dreamy tune, in ways that oddly remind me of Red Velvet, the K-pop group (not the cake flavor). Of course, I love Red Velvet as much as the next guy in line, so there is little room for failure here. As I said, it is all exponentially pop, specifically that whole 2020s R&B/nu-disco revival thing that is by now played out but never stops feeling fresh. Good job, Kenny – this is a slice of 2020s R&B/nu-disco revival well done, even if we are missing the nu-disco to really call it such.
The pastiche element of it all kind of reminds me of Jim E Brown, a singer-songwriter from Manchester that I have been a huge fan of in recent times – Kenny does away without the tragic comedy of a 19-year-old alcoholic character, but he is not hesitant to dip his toes in old-school (yet 2020s R&B/nu-disco revival without the nu-disco) sounds and mild psychedelia. He also disposes of the crippling Britishness, so some charm is lost, but it really is for the best – God knows the world is not prepared for British Kenny Foster.
I wish I had somewhere smart to go with this. I am going to have to cut my losses and observe Grice’s Maxim of Quantity – say as much as you need to, but no more than you must. So, bottom like; “Fixing Up Everything” reminds me of both Red Velvet and Jim E Brown, so I feel inclined to like it – and there you have it.
