Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
“This song is about Mother Africa” – that is what you heard here first, folks!
American singer-songwriter and activist (and pastor, and author… the list goes on, really) Darrell Kelley is back with yet another catchy tune, this time one dedicated to Africa. Inspired by a philanthropic trip he took to the continent and his own African heritage, Kelley penned his new single “Mother Africa,” and it absolutely is different from his previous work. It is not so much a call for change or an overt act of activism, as much as it is a no-strings-attached love letter to one’s own homeland and lineage.
It is quite a hypnotic song, to my ear. The phrase “Mother Africa, I love you” is repeated ad infinitum as Kelley expresses his deep appreciation for his ethnic and cultural heritage. It is not exactly R&B, but R&B is the closest descriptor I can reach for here. It is… hypnotic R&B, which sounds kind of odd when phrased like that, but man, who doesn’t love R&B, and who doesn’t love hypnagogia? Besides, Africa is a continent I would be interested in visiting at least once in this odd fashioning I call my “life.” I would travel more if I had the money for it, but that is a topic for another time.
Darrell Kelley is quite a force to be reckoned with. His music is impactful and can vary dramatically depending on the weather, yet all he does, he does with conviction. The least I can do is respect that, and respect it a lot.
