Divine Martyr is a metal band from the United States. Since their formation in 2016, the ensemble underwent several line-up changes before settling on a four-member configuration with Woody Hughes on bass, Kassandra Chandler on lead vocals, Jason Hyde on guitar and backing vocals, and Mark McKowen on keys and drums.
In September 2026, the quartet released their debut full-length album; “Fidem,” it is called. With this album, Divine Martyr set out to reach “the broken, the lost, the rejected, [and] the ‘others’” and fight the good fight against evil in this world. Whether they achieved their goal, I am not qualified to say; but what I can certainly say is that there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to. “Fidem” is an impressive debut, skillfully combining power metal with orchestral influences.
I went into this album knowing close to nothing about the band, so right off the bat, I was equal parts surprised and delighted to hear female vocals taking the lead on this record; Kassandra Chandler has a rich, bordering-on-operatic voice that elevates what is a collection of already good songs to new heights. Her vocals are backed by Jason Hyde, whose growls add texture and flavor to the final mix – a nice balance is struck here, wouldn’t you say?
The music is highly melodic and progressive, with the dense Wall of Sound arrangements and production reinforcing the melody and harmony. The band’s performance on “Fidem” is sharp, too – you have both metal staples like the arena-ready guitars and nice finishings like the piano on “Before It All.” You have to keep a keen ear out for it, though – the album’s production makes the fine details a bit difficult to discern every now and again, so it is a “blink and you missed it” type of deal.
My personal favorite tracks off “Fidem” are the epic, sweeping opener “Esther’s Prayer” and the dramatic “Bride In Waiting” – but your mileage may vary. What is for sure, though, is that Divine Martyr pulled out the big guns for their debut LP – following 10 years of career and several ups and downs, the band has put together something monumental for their first big statement, blending an eclectic sound with a strong message that is tough to dispute.
