Final verdict: 9/10 ★★★★⋆˙⟡
Well, it appears that Eric Alexandrakis gave us more than just the over-the-top cinematic piece “Life Is Better Live” – on the project’s A-side lies “One More Angel,” a heartfelt tribute to Raul Malo of the Mavericks, who passed away in December 2025 following a gnarly fight with cancer.
Alexandrakis first crossed paths with Raul Malo and the Mavericks when he found himself in Miami, and that was the beginning of a decades-long exchange between the two creative forces. Alexandrakis has twice survived cancer himself, so Malo’s passing hit close to home – and that brings us “One More Angel,” a beautiful tribute to Raul Malo.
“One More Angel” was written by Malo and Alan Miller, and featured on Malo’s 2009 album “Lucky One.” Alexandrakis offers an almost orchestral spin on the track, led by acoustic guitar and accordion (the latter of which is my favorite musical instrument ever, for the record – I am extremely biased here). Alexandrakis’ vocal delivery is touching and sincere, and his band’s rendition of “One More Angel” winds up being this really lush americana extravaganza. It is a celebration of life and a beautiful tribute to Raul Malo, who was gone too soon. No notes, 9/10.
