Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
Eric Alexandrakis is a twice Grammy-nominated musician and composer with quite the streak (I mean, just peep his biography!). After receiving extensive classical training, Alexandrakis put his musical gifts to good use by creating cinematic avant-garde music that feels both traditional and new at once.
“Life Is Better Live” is the soundtrack to a short film directed by acclaimed visual artist Sandro Miller as part of a multimedia exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. The piece draws inspiration from legendary avant-garde composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage and it is written, arranged, performed, and produced by Eric Alexandrakis.
Well, I have never had to review something like this before, so I am at a loss for words in a way, but “Life Is Better Live” is much of what I described above; a highly cinematic and strangely emotional avant-garde experiment. It mixes classical sensibilities with sound collage and dense soundscapes, and it really is a breath of fresh air. It is an extremely stressful listen, but then again, since when has that been a problem for me?
“Life Is Better Live” is rather thrilling as a standalone musical piece, and it really left me a bit curious to see the short film it comes from. Maybe someday?
