Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
I was introduced to the glittering world of jazz fusion in much of the same way many fellow nerds were; and that was through Japanese fusion acts. Think Casiopea, think Kenso, think of that sort of thing. Though none of these bands managed to reach “hood classic” status for me, I have become well acquainted with what they do, and that is instrumental jazz-funk. It is a quintessential sound that never gets old, and it brings me to my latest musical discovery – Yulia’s new single “Let’s Agree to Love.”
“Let’s Agree to Love” is a slice of instrumental jazz fusion, much like Casiopea and Kenso’s work, but it does not get its hands dirty quite as much as the aforementioned bands do. The entire track is based around a simple piano motif and backed by a full band, namely a saxophone contribution by Jackiem Joyner and a super funky bassline performed by Sekou Bunch. Yulia herself plays piano, synths, and is responsible for the composition and arrangement of the piece, which heavily leans into certain pop sensibilities.
Yulia has received several honors for her work as a composer and music producer, and she has cobbled together an all-star band for “Let’s Agree to Love” – the final product is a lush, jolly, and most of all funky smooth jazz tune. I couldn’t put it any other way, and most of all, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
