Final verdict: 9/10 ★★★★⋆˙⟡
Billy Joel is a big guilty pleasure of mine, I must admit. He is but a whiny man who whines, but he writes some very good songs which to whine with. And now that I found Chris Keaton and the Millennials’ “Lucky For Me”… it is all coming back to me, bit by bit. The harmonica, the piano, the blues, the endearing uncle voice – this might as well be a modern-day Billy Joel, and it might just be that I no longer need to dig through record stores to get my hit of this exact old-school sound. It exists on the Internet if you look deep enough, and that, I did not know.
But well, “Lucky For Me” is a good song – nay, a great one. It is only the collective’s second single (their debut “New Money” came out just two months ago as of my writing this review), but I feel confident in saying that they already have their act down. Their work sounds straight out of another era but does away without the old-timey cheese – it is great for the world to pretend that this is anything but the 2020s, a decade we will likely opt not to recall in the future. Temporal escapism is one hell of a drug.
So put on your bell-bottom jeans and light a cigarette inside the pub – for it is the early 1970s all over again. Lucky for us, Chris Keaton and the Millennials are a good band that we can enjoy, and lucky for Chris Keaton and the Millennials, they are a good band that will be enjoyed once they are force-shoved into people’s radars. I am only doing my part here by shouting them out on my blockbuster website – the rest is up to you, for I will take my leave right about now.
I cannot stop thinking about Billy Joel, damn it.
