Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
Once upon a time, my father and I wrote a handful of songs together for fun. He is not a musician and I was a child (but not a prodigy), so naturally they were kind of shit. Anyway. Then there is Bullets and Butterflies, a band that sprouted out of the daddy/daughter duo of Josephine Marie and Wally Joseph, and they are actually really good – not shit at all. The dad is a musician and the daughter is a talented adult. Let us take for example their newest single “Not Yours To Lose” – it is quite epic, a classic rock yet fundamentally punk-ish moment. Let me relate another tale to better illustrate my point, while I am at it.
In 2024 I took an audio engineering course for which we mixed a song in a workshop-type fashion. We had to mix… well, it was rock music, obviously, but it was female-fronted rock music. It was a strong woman voice, sort of like Patti Smith, and sort of like what Josephine Marie has going for herself in “Not Yours To Lose” (and generally, I assume). The song was also slathered in really big, rather distorted guitars, so I stored it away in my memory as a quintessential arena rock tune, though it was in truth recorded by a band composed of classmates of mine. It is a fond memory, really, and it is another thing that reminds me of Bullets and Butterflies’ work.
Then there is my endless supply of memories of walking along the beach while listening to 1980s Japanese post-punk and new wave. “Not Yours To Lose” conjures that worldview up as well, if to a lesser degree. In a solid two for three (or three for three? Up to you to choose…), Bullets and Butterflies’ new single reminds me of all sorts of pleasant things, because it really is a good song, you know? I like its anthemic quality, its lush instrumentation, and the band appears to be tight. No further notes, just pure vibes. The world is dominated by vibes as of 2026, so that is an a-okay and totally sane statement to make.
