Final verdict: 10/10 ★★★★★
I do not think I have ever given a single a 10/10 rating before but fuck it, here we go. I promise it will be well worth it.
To give you a brief rundown; Dusky Waters is a singer-songwriter from New Orleans, keen on that rootsy Americana sound we all know and (occasionally) love. Her album “Mother Magnolia” is slated for a November 2026 release and its title track just made the rounds as a promotional single a few days ago. Its title track just made the rounds as a promotional single a few days ago, and oh my God, it is a magnificent one.
The lyrics read like a poem about family relations, but they could also be interpreted as an ode to one’s homeland – it is up to the listener to decide, really. With that said, what really sells this nifty little tune for me is its banjo and fiddle-led backing, its beautiful, flourishing arrangement, its radical emphasis on melody, and Dusky Waters’ soulful voice (it fits her sound so well!) – all of that is to say that I like damn near everything this song has to offer, and I will definitely be listening to Dusky Waters’ album when it is released. The question is, will you be in for the ride?
This song is roughly on par with Cheer Chen’s heartfelt “最初的起點,” which is saying a lot. Why does everything have to be a 10/10 all the time? That is a question I’ll leave with you, my dear reader.
