Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
Rapper Ja Fearce recently released his debut EP “Shawty” following a string of singles, and the release’s closer is our main concern today. The bouncy “OO’ Shawty” is a blast from the past and a breath of fresh air at the same time, a catchy tune that is not reluctant to let loose.
Right off the bat, one can see that “OO’ Shawty” is exemplary of the New Orleans-based artist’s sound – it is a mixture of hip-hop and neo-soul endeavor. The lyrics are descriptive of a woman who is peculiar in her ways, and the beat is very Y2K-esque – and not in the tossed-off Y2K revival way. That late 1990s feel is combined with colorful production, all of which is most tasteful, and yet what most strikes me here is Ja’s sharp, confident flow, which indicates great skill and equally great potential. It really is great.
This brand-new track is totally worth a listen for fans of contemporary R&B and rap – it combines the best parts of old-school hip-hop with the most interesting elements of modern pop, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
