Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
Shoegaze appears to be alive and well, as is the case with trip-hop and jangle pop, and I know that because indie rock collective Across Phoenix just blessed us with a mighty slab of all these elements mixed together. Taken off their 2026 EP “Dreaming Opaline” (oh, such a dreamy title), “We Are Echos” incorporates the sounds of the past in with those of the present in a captivating theater of genre-blending.
And it really is good – the synths are big and atmospheric, the guitars are big and atmospheric, everything is big and atmospheric. It is all most transcendental and a little reminiscent of 1980s alternative rock, and there’s even some piano action to seal the deal! Frontwoman Emma Lee has a rather delightful vocal tone – it is very dreamy, just like the EP’s title, and oh, the romance! Indie music is alive and thriving, and I apologize for having ever doubted that fact.
Rising from the ashes of non-existence like a phoenix and darting across the sky, Across Phoenix are certainly a fresh talent to keep in mind. Cheers to the indie rock renaissance that brought us the likes of several indie rock acts! I am forever indebted to the heavens for they made this happen.
