The Heard Eye – Free Everybody (2023)

Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆

Another day, another The Heard Eye feature. Except this tune is not new, no, not at all – “Free Everybody” is a track off the funk-rock collective’s 2023 album “Funkalypse.” That is to say, it has been out for a while now, but that is no deterrent for the purposes of this article, as this is funky, alright. The Heard Eye have a solid thing going for themselves it seems, at last and after all.

An anthem about the world’s “predicament” and the importance of maintaining a positive stance through all the torments, “Free Everybody” is a brilliant display of The Heard Eye at their grooviest. It is complete with a goofy-yet-essential trumpet solo and frontman Paul Schneider’s raspy vocal delivery – it truly is for the best, because the music would profoundly suffer without such bells and whistles. There is a dad rock quota to be met in cases like this, and the closer a song gets to fulfilling said quota, the better. It’s law of nature.

I don’t know, man, I really can’t deny the funk in this one. I can’t deny the groove, and I can’t deny the music. “Free Everybody” does fall a little bit short of the band’s latest “Point of You,” but can that really be held against it? Is holding grudges against any song at all productive? I would wager not, and besides, I find myself compulsively dancing to this fun little song – can’t help it! I am biased, but most of all, I am utmost convinced. 8/10.
