Final verdict: 9/10 ★★★★⋆˙⟡
Now this right here, this is funky, alright.
I previously tackled The Heard Eye in a review of their “Plenty Love,” and one thing about their – objectively pretty groovy – work that I found plenty disappointing was the relative lack of funk. Sobriety in sound is a-okay, but it is not so much when the artist behind it is a self-proclaimed funk-rock act. But – in spite of my positive impression of their track as it was – write The Heard Eye off I did too soon; their brand new single, “Point of You,” is funky alright. Everybody, get more jiggy now!
Between the crisp guitars and the jolly farfisa and clavinet, the throbbing bassline and the dynamic horns, this is The Heard Eye confidently stepping into the funky territory they’ve long been promising. Like so, I retract my previous statement about The Heard Eye “not doing it [by the book]” – I’ve been empirically proven wrong. The tune at hand is catchy, it is bold, and it compels the listener to maneuver those joints of theirs to its pumping, unrelenting beat.
Roughly on par with the 5-piece unit’s last release “Plenty Love,” “Point of You” is an even more polished piece to get down and dirty to. Everybody, get more jiggy now! And perhaps keep an eye out for The Heard Eye, because it appears to me that their craft is only getting sharper with each release. This one goes out to all the funky fellows out there. 9/10.
P.S.: “Point of You” is a near homophone of “Point of View.” Was that an intended pun? Where do I weave this into the fabric? I know not. Ἓν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα, I suppose.
