Final verdict: 9/10 ★★★★⋆˙⟡
Man, when I read that The Heard Eye, the 5-piece outfit I was assigned to review on this cold Tuesday night, did “funk rock”, I was pumped to check them out. As a certified funky fellow, I love myself some funk to get down and funky to. Needless to say, I felt very disappointed to find out that their most recent single, “Plenty Love” – although plentifully rock – was not funky at all. What gives?
Thankfully, though, it is a great song, if underwhelming in the funk department. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, “Plenty Love” is plenty catchy (the chorus remains ringing in my head following a mere two listens!), plenty cool (it made me feel the pacifist swagger of Ringo Starr in my bones), and plenty good (plenty of happy chemicals were released in my brain over the course of the two listens I paid this song – with plenty more to come!). The instrumentation is as 1990s rock as it gets, but since when has that been a problem for me? Big guitars never fail to paint a ginormous, stupid-looking smile on my face, and I love the electric organ abuse this thing has goin’ for itself. The lo-fi charm is much evident and moreover, the lyrics promote peace and love – both of which the world is in dire need of these days – and so, what is there to dislike?
Catchy? Check. Skillfully written and arranged? Check. Positive message that aligns with my morals? Check. Funk? Nay. Rock? Sure, what the hell.
There’s not much else to be said, apart from that my love for this song is plenty. 9/10. Good tune, thank you The Heard Eye!◝(ᵔᗜᵔ)◜
