Final verdict: 6/10 ★★★☆☆
There are two types of “space music” out there: Louis Armstrong (space age), and Guernica (alien transmissions). Then there is KIES’ new single “You’re Golden,” which is rather preposterously queering the binary.
Listen, I cannot understand what the guy is saying. His singing style can most aptly be described as “slurred mumbling” (so mumbling, which is by definition slurred speech, except even more slurred in this case) and I am not certain whether that is a bad or a good thing. The minimalistic soundscape with its airy synths and bare-bones presence makes it all feel a little otherworldly, wouldn’t you agree? You get a faint inkling of that 1940s space-fascination sound, mixed with the surreality of the oddity that is Guernica’s rendition of new wave, mixed with cutting-edge 2020s production… it’s all too much for me, and yet it is nothing at all, because in spite of having listened to the song a solid handful of times, I cannot for the life of me recall what it sounds like. All I remember is it kind of feels like floating… and I do not know if it is me (read: the listener) who is supposed to be floating, or if the song itself is the levitant, for it goes over my head. Maybe I should get my platform shoes, because maybe then I will “get it.” I will finally be tall enough to grasp this highness, and I will finally be tall enough to escape my raging Napoleon complex.
I’m not saying it is a bad song by any means, but I am saying that I do not really understand it. It is a little alien. Not “too alien,” but certainly cosmic in one way or another. I am perplexed and captivated all at once. Wow. 6/10.
