Final verdict: 9/10 ★★★★⋆˙⟡
By now, it would be no stretch of imagination to call me a person easily amused. Everything is interesting (and oftentimes fascinating) to me, and that can be taken to mean one of two things; either everything is indeed so peculiar as to warrant fancy, and I am right to recognize that beauty in the ordinary, or I am but a fool who aimlessly wanders artistic terrain for nothing to find, all the while believing that I have indeed stumbled upon something of worth. But peep Logan Metz’s new single, the double A-side “Sunrise/Overrated” – am I really in the wrong to claim this right here is awesome?
No, really. “Sunrise/Overrated” is Milwaukee-based artist Logan Metz’s lead single off his upcoming studio record, and in listening to it, I at once fell head over heels with its sound, which is closely reminiscent of the sound of an era long past – the mid-1960s is right about where I’d place it, but your mileage may vary. The lyrics are not as heavy on storytelling as they are on painting a robust mental image, whether that be one of self-realization (see “Sunrise”) or one of, well, exhausted evaluation (“Overrated”).
The turns of phrase and wit are absolutely present throughout, however as per usual, what most potently strikes me in vintage-sounding music is the aural landscape itself. “Sunrise” is led by the electric piano that beautifully plagues it, but the slide guitar (a style of guitar I’ve grown extremely affectionate towards as of late) accompaniment and the mid-way saxophone solo are equally definitive of the recording. The bouncy chord progression and uncle-ish (a term I use endearingly) vocal ornaments are just another bonus atop the quality songwriting and the neat instrumentation on boast here. It’s a little middle-of-the-road, if I may call it that. “Overrated,” on the other hand, ditches the streamlined clarity of “Sunrise” for what I call a “drunk man’s band” approach to arrangement. But that’s not a very good description, now is it?
Allow me to set the scene: you’re a miserable 50-something trying to find solace in a small, kind of smelly dimly-lit bar in an equally dimly-lit alley downtown. The only sound engaging your earholes is your token drunk man’s band – an underpaid local band playing mood swingin’ late-night tunes for your off-his-ass drunk ass, and other off-their-asses drunk asses who bond over cheap beer to drown out their relentless sorrow. The music is very blues-y, just like your state of mind and apparent foul destiny after your wife filed for divorce for the second time this year, threatening to take the kids (and dog!) with her in deserting you. But you know, the tunes are good. You quite enjoy the tunes. They’re sloppy, they’re imperfect, but then again, is anything truly “perfect” in this life you embrace? With this thought and the companion soundtrack, life seems a little brighter, if only momentarily. Shoutout to the underpaid local band for salvaging your fairly mangled Thursday night… by playing a piece akin to Logan Metz’s “Overrated,” I suppose.
In case that description of the latter track feels derogatory, I’d like to quickly assure you that it is absolutely not. As a matter of fact, “Overrated” is my favorite song of the couple; easy 10/10. As for “Sunrise”? Easy 8/10. You know how to work out an average – “Sunrise/Overrated” is a definite (and easy) 9/10. Just like that, Mr. Metz’s upcoming album has made his way to being on my list of pieces of media that I am eagerly awaiting this 2026.
