Final verdict: 8/10 ★★★★☆
Man, the 2010s were a peculiar time. I was but a young fellow at the time and the screentime I was allowed was (thankfully) minimal, yet I vividly recall that era of the internet and tend to think back on it fondly. Do you remember all the musical shitposts to come out of that time? The life-defining “Nyan Cat” has to be the be-all and end-all of this – for lack of a non-oxymoronic phrase – massive niche, but you also have cases like “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” and “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” (the latter of which I reckon landed in the 2000s, but is an apt example for the narrative I’m trying to sell here). These songs are frequently – though not always – specifically produced with the dream of being worn thin through internet virality, and though most eventually fizzle out, some have nevertheless managed to go down pop culture history. That early 2010s shitpost aesthetic of – excuse my language – absurd “quirkiness” is a very distinct style and inflection that one cannot ignore when looking back on the internet as it was then. Meme songs still go around abundantly in the big 2025 (WE ARE CHAAARLIE KIIIIRK), but their shelf life is much shorter and it’s rather difficult to pinpoint the real “hits” if not in retrospect – regardless, it is safe to say that things are not the same, and that the meme songs of today are in most regards completely different from what was previously considered fit to take the internet by storm.
Trust me, I was just as surprised as you will soon be when I found that this month Joby Longyin released an advance song from his upcoming album “Saatana” (to be released this Christmas day!), only for it to be… a blatant attempt at a 2010s meme song, and an attempt well done at that. No, seriously – you could tell me this was released in 2013, and I would in an instant believe you. The song is called “Chicken and Cheese With A Siding of Peas,” and well, from that title alone, you can sort of guess what you’re in for. This song is an ode to diarrhea, to put it blunt. You know, this guy appears to be a proponent of the chicken-and-cheese-and-peas man diet, but he does acknowledge that he (presumably) stinks thanks to it. And that is no good.
This song is thus to be taken as a cautionary tale under the premise of comedy. Like yeah, it’s very overtly a joke-y song, but there is a deeper meaning to the lyrics, that being… well, the cautionary tale that we just spoke of. Musically, it’s a fat slice of electronica with big beats and a quite unpredictable harmonic structure – all quite interesting to my ear. “Chicken and Cheese With A Siding of Peas” is a brief, catchy disclaimer as to the horrifying side effects of a questionable-at-best diet, and I… really love it for that? I don’t know, man. But my time was by no means wasted, as I now know better than to eat chicken and cheese with a siding of peas, a meal I hadn’t thought possible until encountering this eye-opening tune. Truly spectacular… or dare I say “spooptacular,” ha, ha, ha.
Get it? Because “poop”?
I’ll show myself out. It’s not right that I continue making poop jokes into my advanced age. Anyway. This song is fun, it doesn’t take itself seriously – which is honestly exactly what the stuck-up music landscape of this age needs – and I like it a lot. 8/10.
