Hey – another Zachary Chacon project! You know him from the quite uniquely styled Hollywood Video Game Kill-Bot, which makes me wonder just how many aliases this guy has up his sleeve. Regardless, today I bring to you; “Feeling Today,” the newest single release by one man band Cabbage Patch Kill Dolls.
You see, this is an interesting specimen. It immediately greets the listener with a swarm of noisy, disheveled guitars – an element that is to remain for the entire duration of the song – and spoken word vocals. I’d love to say that it is in line with the post-punk idiom with its gritty, distorted instrumentation and deadpan vocal quality, but the truth is that this feels profoundly avant-garde in ways not even the funkiest offspring of post-punk can match. It is quite easy to get lost in the wall of sound that’s going on here, and it is truly peculiar.
All this aural disorder is starkly contrasted by the lyrics, that describe a mundane day-to-day life. It is a very neutrally phrased and ordinary narrative, but in conjunction with the music, it almost sounds like boredom verging on anger. And you know what? I like it.
