Yellow Magic Orchestra – “Service” review

Yellow Magic Orchestra – Service (1983)

Final verdict: 6/10 ★★★☆☆

This is basically what YMO attempted to do with “Naughty Boys”, just a lot better than its unfortunate predecessor.

The songs are probably far from the greatest in YMO’s discography, however you have complete bangers like “Limbo”, “Chinese Whispers”, and “See-Through”, so it’s hard to dislike. Not much against the rest of the songs as well, maybe save for “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, which kind of sticks out like a sore thumb and could’ve very well been replaced by “過激な淑女”, which is an incredible song that would’ve fit the album reasonably well. Better than “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, that’s for damn sure. I don’t want “Naughty Boys” rejects in my “Service”, no thank you!

Just like with “Multiplies”, the content of the comedy skits completely went over my head, since I don’t know Japanese. Only this time the skits were substantially lengthier and therefore more tiring to sit through. For what reason would anyone ever want to listen to an album that’s 50% comedy skits that are, in some occasions, longer in duration than the actual songs? Make it make sense.

The actual music here is pretty great though, so it would be unfair to rate this album anything under a 3/5. It could’ve easily been a 3.5/5 without the skits though, just sayin’.
